The Process

Ask each team member to prepare a slide or two with responses to these four points: Three deeply held values that make me who I am.

Three things that energize me at work.

One thing that brings out the worst in me.

The legacy I dream of leaving.

Each team member shares his or her responses with the entire team. Encourage teammates to make notes as they listen.

Following each person’s disclosure, facilitate conversation exploring how this person’s responses might affect how they collaborate on team projects/initiatives shared by the entire team (those from the center of the Radar Screen). Invite questions from other team members who are curious to know more. Allow 10 – 15 minutes per person.

After all team members have presented, discuss how you will conduct the subgroup debriefs. Explain that each person will meet with their sub-groups (as identified in the Radar Screen) to discuss how the information they shared about themselves in Step 2 could affect their shared work. Given the overlap of members across sub-groups this may require a few rounds for all sub-groups to complete the conversations.

While working in sub-groups be sure to refer to the subgroup contracts described above. This ensures that people’s personalities and preferences are appropriately accounted for in your working agreements.

After all the subgroups have had their contracting conversations, convene a team meeting to discuss how things went, what the team learned and what adjustments they may need to make based on the conversations.
