CHAPTER FIFTEEN

The following morning, Maggie was cleaning up after breakfast when she heard the front door slam. It wasn’t long till she heard a familiar voice calling out, “Whose RV is that parked in the drive?”

Maggie turned and smiled as her son came into the kitchen. It seemed the older he got the more he looked like his father. “As if you didn’t know.”

“Hi, Mom.” He scooped her into his arms and hugged her. “How are you?”

“Great, now that you’re here.” Though they talked often on the phone, she hadn’t seen him since they had all gotten together at Easter at her home in Seville. She looked behind him for the rest of his family. “Candice and the kids couldn’t come, or were they afraid to?”

He chuckled. “Candice couldn’t get off work and Daniel has a baseball game tomorrow.” He stepped back and leaned against the counter. “You look good.”

“I feel good.” Despite the fact that Lannie was barely speaking to her, she was glad she’d made the trip with Carson. Not only were he and Matt hitting it off, the kids loved him.

“So where is this new boyfriend?”

Maggie couldn’t help but smile. The concept was finally sinking in and she found she liked it—a lot. “He’s out back with the boys showing them how to throw a spiral.”

Frank peered out the window over the kitchen sink. “He looks harmless enough. I was expecting fangs or at least a pitch fork.”

Maggie laughed. He may have gotten his handsome features from his father but he got his sense of humor from her. “Carson is very harmless. Come on and I’ll introduce you.”

Maggie led Frank by the hand into the backyard. “Sorry to interrupt, boys, but I have someone here I’d like Carson to meet.”

Carson came over and put his arm around Maggie before offering his hand.

Maggie smiled at his boldness. “Carson, this is my son, Frank.”

Frank shook Carson’s hand. “It’s a pleasure, sir. I hear you were a judge?”

Maggie was tempted to laugh. The only way he would have known that was if Lannie had called him after their arrival. No doubt, that was where she had disappeared to last night while she, Carson, and Matt had entertained the children.

“That’s right. I served on the bench for twenty-five years. Before that I was a prosecutor.”

“Do you have any references?”

“Excuse me?”

“If you’re going to be dating our mother, we’ll want a list of references.”

Maggie elbowed Carson; only then did Frank crack a smile.

“You had me going there for a minute.”

“Sorry, just thought I’d lighten the mood. I can only imagine what you’ve been through since you got here. You have my sincere apologies.”

“Maybe if your mother hadn’t sprung the news on Lannie only hours before we got here, some of the tension could have been avoided.”

“What? You’re blaming me for my daughter’s behavior?” Knowing all along, he was partially right. She should have called Lannie sooner in the week and told her she’d met someone special.

Frank turned to Maggie. “A little more time to get used to the idea might have helped.
