LILA ROLLED ONTO her back and stared up into darkness. Despite the blanket folded beneath her, the floor felt harder than usual that night. Red had offered to take her place by the hearth, but she’d refused. His wound had healed better than she could have hoped, but he still showed signs of fatigue and weakness. Another three or four days would make a difference.

Then he’d be gone.

What was it she felt for him? Not love. At least, not in its deepest form. But the beginnings of it, perhaps. The flutter in her stomach whenever he was near. The quickening of her heart when he said her name or used one of his beautiful Irish terms of endearment. Her discreet fascination with his body, his mouth, his eyes. A desire to be touched by him. Held by him. A longing to hear him tell her he felt the same.

She had no doubt he liked her. Wanted her. With little encouragement, he’d happily take her virtue, no doubt with gentleness and passion. But he’d made it quite clear how he felt about commitments. If she surrendered to him, he’d leave anyway, and she’d never see him again.

Three or four days.

Weary of the chaos in her head, Lila closed her eyes and begged for sleep to come.
