Conclusion

In spite of the arousal of painful feelings, the staff continues to have an open dialogue on race and racism resulting in a positive outcome. Staff members have frequently verbalized how productive these discussions have been. They feel secure enough to talk about their personal experiences and assumptions, and to ask questions about cultures and ways of being that are different from their own. Our ability to move beyond cultural competency and begin an evolution towards an antiracist framework has enriched our shelter milieu and positively impacted the individuals who participate in it. The staff is committed to continuing the open dialogue on race and racism to further build on the antiracist framework.
