Only those closest to the Queen were aware that it was Conroy she had suspected of misconduct, far more than Lady Flora. Victoria’s diaries from the Kensington period suggest that she had witnessed Conroy “taking liberties” of some sort with her mother, and she had indicated to Melbourne that she had witnessed such conduct from Conroy as would dispose her to believe him capable of anything. She did not like Lady Flora, but that was almost beside the point. Victoria had lost sight of the fact—or not yet fully realized—that as monarch, her least suggestion or whisper could result in disastrous consequences for the persons it concerned. To put it another way, she did not yet know her own strength. But this business was to teach her a hard lesson in monarchial privilege and its limits.
