Chapter 22
Nicklaus tried to keep his mind on dancing with the young lady in front of him, but found it wandering to his wife instead.
And the way that guy had looked at her when she danced with him. Who was he? Nicklaus couldn’t see Yvette’s face as they’d danced, but they were dancing far closer than she had with anyone else. Could it be an old boyfriend? Someone she’d hoped would be more than a friend before Nicklaus had come back from the dead?
Had he ever flat out asked her if there was someone else?
The woman he was dancing with asked him a question about his upbringing. He focused his attention on her and gave the same vague, innocuous answer he gave everyone else. After that dance, there was another. Then another. And another. A seemingly endless line of women he didn’t know and would never remember.
Finally, the last dance came around, and Nicklaus found his wife in his arms again.
“Have you enjoyed yourself?” she asked.
He shrugged. “It’s been fine. I’m ready to get out of here, though.”
“Me, too.”
Nicklaus glanced over at one of the staff members, the one who seemed to be in charge of this thing. She nodded at him so he let go of Yvette and took her hand, leading her out the side door and on the long walk to their room. As they reached the top of the first set of stairs, Yvette stopped and kicked her shoes off.
“Much better.” They kept walking, hand in hand, as she went on. “You know what Malachi and I used to do?”
“What’s that?”
“We used to slide around on the ballroom floor in our socks.” She didn’t look at him. “Did you ever see Frozen? The Disney movie with the ice queen Elsa?”
“Um, maybe?” He had. He should just tell her that. “Yeah. I watched it with Michaela because it was her kind of thing.”
“Remember when Anna and Elsa go play in the ballroom as little girls?”
“I think so.” Kind of.
“Like that, but without snow. We’d pretend we were ice skating or just play tag. He always let me win.”
As soon as they reached their room inside their apartment, Yvette flopped into the overstuffed chaise lounge.
“You okay?” he asked, sitting down to pull off the blasted boots.
“Yeah. My feet just hurt.”
Nicklaus went into the closet and quickly changed into his favorite pajama pants and a t-shirt. He pulled the chair from the writing desk they never used over next to the chaise and sat down, picking up one of Yvette’s feet. She’d pulled off her stockings at some point. With his thumbs he kneaded the bottom of her foot until he heard a relaxed sigh escape.
“That feels good.” He could barely make out the words.
Instead, Nicklaus set that foot down and picked up the other foot, massaging it until he realized she’d fallen asleep. Now, the questions came to him. Did he try to change her clothes? Leave her where she lay in her dress? Move her to the bed and cover her up?
Finally, that’s what he decided to do.
