Most of the delegates find much to criticize in the pessimism, the decadence, the empty experiments with form in work by Resnais, Antonioni, Malle, and others, However, even in the hard-driving, anti-aesthetic arguments, there seems to be less rigidity. Brazilian delegate Walter de Silveira may say—“Abstract art is impossible in a socialist country because it can’t reflect the people”—but his statement sounds curiously dogmatic. Soviet director G. M. Kozintsaev strikes a truer tone. After paying tribute to Fellini and La Dolce Vita, he says: “But Cuba could not use the art being used by Fellini.”38
