The Parrot

MY mother frequently averred

The parrot is a vulgar bird,

Feather flaunting, scrannel throat,

Squawking a senseless note.

In the green salons many-leaved

The parrot never is received;

He can’t keep with propriety

The rules of good society.

And still I hate his crimson wing

And shudder when I hear him sing

His shrill, mechanical patter,

Not like good monkey chatter.

So one day I shall track and find him,

Softly, secretly come behind him,

And give his song a check

And wring his emerald neck.
