Camtasia
Camtasia is a video and screen capture program that can be used to create vodcasts. The program can also be used to create podcasts. Camtasia was developed by a company called TechSmith and requires a license to use. The learning curve for Camtasia is similar to that of using iMovie yet both programs share similar interfaces consisting of a timeline, canvas, and tools panels.
At the top of the Camtasia interface are a record button, a pointer, a pan button (indicated by a hand icon), and a crop button. When pushing the record button, users have the choice to record the screen (screencast) or to select an input device, such as a built-in camera, microphone, or both. The pointer allows access to manipulate the timeline. The pan button can be used to move elements within the canvas, and the crop button can change the zoom factor of the canvas using the dropdown menu to the right of the button. There are also shortcuts at the top of the interface to access downloads and to finally share a finished Camtasia video to various web platforms and hosting services.
The timeline is where audio and video are edited. It can contain multiple tracks, which can be useful when visualizing when elements appear within the canvas. The time-line has a toolbar similar to that of a word processing program. These tools include undo, re-do, cut, copy, and paste buttons. There is also a shortcut to split clips. A zoom slider scale is used to zoom in or out of the timeline, which can be particularly helpful when examining large projects or for precise and accurate editing. A scale for time is above the tracks to help organize the video. Camtasia can trim clips by adjusting the end of the clips with the cursor or they can be cut using the split tool.
The Canvas panel in Camtasia is similar to the Preview Theater of iMovie, which displays clips. The Tools panel contains instruments to manipulate the clip. The Tools panel includes available media, a library that contains built-in graphics, annotations, transitions, behaviors (text-effects) and clips that the editor can drag and drop onto the timeline. There are also cursor effects to highlight the mouse pointer. This is useful if the vodcast is using a screen capture. There is also a voice narration option that can be spoken over video clips, audio effects including noise removal, audio compression, fade-in or -out, and speed adjustments. There are also screen effects that can be used to alter the color or add special effects frames to the film. To improve accessibility, the program also has a captioning tool to support hard of hearing or deaf users.
When you are dragging elements into the timeline, they can be further adjusted by opening the properties dialogue above the timeline. Here the editor can rotate, resize, reposition, or change the opacity of selected graphic elements.
Camtasia may be best suited for instructional vodcasts as that is what the program was initially designed for. Camtasia works
