Catherine slipped in through the servantsâ door and up the back steps, careful to keep as far from the hospital as possible, but Michaelâs impish question niggled an aggravating curiosity. Sheâd convinced herself to go directly to her room and change upon arrival, but her Pietro Yantorny shoes turned her in the opposite direction. Clearly, the Italian designer set Cupidâs bow on the tips rather than the cloth buckle. She should have worn her practical English black leather lace-ups.
Her plum traveling suit caught the attention of almost every soldier she passed, and she tried to ignore the small thrill of pleasure. Their small gaze of admiration certainly did wonders for her confidence.
As she drew close to Davidâs office, the sound of music slowed her steps. Music? Suddenly, from behind, Jessica took her arm and pulled her to the office door.
âI canât believe Iâm saying this, but Iâm actually glad youâre here,â she whispered and gestured toward the room with her head. âYou have to fix this.â
Jessica? Glad to see her? Something must be very wrong. âWhat is it?â
âLook.â
Catherine peeked around the frame of the door and almost lost control of her laugh. In the center of the room, Adelaide Moore danced with Davidâ¦or at least, Catherine thought the aim was dancing.
âIâm no expert on dancing, but that doesnât look like anything Iâve seen before.â Jessica grimaced. âHeâs as stiff as a nutcracker. In fact, so is she.â
âThey do appear rather clockwork, donât they?â Catherine lowered her laugh into her hand. âYour poor brother.â
âItâs fine for you to laugh now, when no one can see him, but I will not have him be made the fool.â Jessicaâs harsh whisper grew in volume. âGo in there and show him the proper way.â
âWhat?â Heat drained from Catherineâs face at the thought of Davidâs arms around her. âNo.â
âYou would rather him dance in front of the whole town like this?â
Catherine cringed.
âExactly.â
âYou should be the last person asking me.â Catherine took another look at the pair. Dancing might have been Miss Mooreâs goal, but it certainly wasnât the result.
âThen itâs pretty obvious how desperate I am.â Jessicaâs eyes took on a fire. âGo, help him.â
Catherine clutched Jessicaâs arm and pulled her along. âOn one condition. You must stay in the room at all times.â
âWhy? Are you afraid youâll do something irresponsible?â
âNot me, but I have the uncanny ability to inspire your brother toward ridiculous notions.â Catherine gave Jessicaâs arm another squeeze for emphasis, hoping her steady gaze proved her point. âAnd both of us want him far from the ridiculous, right?â
To Catherineâs surprise, Jessicaâs lips twitched into a smile. âYou attempt the impossible. I just donât want him looking likeâ¦that.â
Catherine shot Jessica an annoyed glance and stepped into the room. âMiss Moore, I am so glad I found you.â
Adelaide blinked her large eyes. âFound me?â
Catherine tried to avoid looking at David. Those eyes. His smile. âIâm afraid Nurse Ross has been beyond help with her nerves regarding this ball.â
Adelaide looked to Jessica. Jessica stared at Catherine and Catherine nodded.
