GEOGRAPHICAL VARIATION IN PREVALENCE OF SPECIES IN THE GREY PARTRIDGE

Suppose we travelled overland to Mongolia observing grey partridges along the way. We would be hard pushed to see any differences in the outward appearance of the birds, greyer perhaps as we pushed on eastwards. But suppose we could see inside the birds! As we travelled east familiar parasites would disappear and new ones appear until at journey’s end all would be different (Fig. 180).

FIG 180. Grey partridge: the changing prevalence of parasitic worms from west to east.

Note: The Dissimilarity index (Bray–Curtis) was obtained by reference to Clapham’s results for the 1930s (the largest investigation). The other authorities are Denmark (Madsen, 1941, 1952), Czechoslovakia (Páv, 1961), Poland (Fagasinski, 1964; Bezubik, 1958; Kozakiewicz et al., 1983), Croatia (Vražic, 1957), Finland (Lampio, 1946; Raitis, 1970), Romania (Chiriac et al., 1972), Bulgaria (Stoimenov & Trifinov, 1964), Russia (Kozhokov, 2007), Armenia (Hakhumian & Khanbekian, 1982), Georgia (Kurashvilli, 1957), Kazakhstan (Gvozdev, 1958), and Daurian partridge (Gvozdev, 1957).
