It Takes Too Long

Getting everyone’s input, creating universal buy-in, all-for-one-and-one-for-all: it all looks great on paper, but in practicality it doesn’t make sense! That’s the common retort I hear from managers. Including everyone simply takes too long.

The answer: it does take longer, but it’s worth it. The time spent on the front end will be long lasting on the back end. The results are what matter, and the consequences of buy-in through team building will be motivated people who will take ownership and you will have the level of commitment you desire. As you start to look at the culture in your organization, remember that leaders don’t create cultures for people; they create cultures with people.

In his book, Leaders Eat Last: Why Some Teams Pull Together and Others Don’t, Simon Sinek writes:

“The true price of leadership is the willingness to place the needs of others above your own. Great leaders truly care about those they are privileged to lead and understand that the true cost of the leadership privilege comes at the expense of self-interest … Let us all be the leaders we wish we had.”

Every leader and influencer needs to learn how to facilitate the co-creation process. When people are heard they will be helpful. When people are involved they are empowered. When people collaborate they will be committed.
