Papal Patronage

In 1464, two years after receiving St. Andrew’s head in Rome, Pius II visited Loreto. On his way to Ancona, where he hoped to launch his long-planned crusade, the ailing pope prayed before the image of the Virgin, asking for relief from his fever and cough and the pains in his limbs. He left a golden chalice as an offering, hoping for a cure for himself and success for his crusade.70 Neither was granted: Pius died soon after reaching Ancona, awaiting a crusader fleet that never arrived. As the cardinals and courtiers who accompanied him started their journey back to Rome, Cardinal Pietro Barbo fell ill with a pain in his groin that left him unable to sit on his horse. He, too, called in at Loreto to pray to the Virgin. He received not only a cure for his embarrassing condition but also the news, delivered in a vision, that he would soon become pope.71
