Teen-agers
Teenagers are the hardest group of people to switch over but one that you can win over with science and a lot of facts. With teen-agers, saying “Because I say so” won’t be as effective as “Aren’t you taking a serious health risk?” Spare yourself the time and energy arguing the merits of Paleo by pointing them to the science and the facts and let them discover it for themselves. If you have other children, don’t polarize. Instead enlist your spouse help and have a family council to talk about eating right as a family. Discuss some rules like everyone should eat whatever is served; lunch is a choice that they have to make on their own; and dinner is another meal where everyone eats what is served or skip eating. Aside from rules, open up planning what meals to have to your children. Use the same venue to discuss choices and teach them Paleo recipes. Allow room for foods you can eat in moderation to be on the menu.
This strategy goes well with teen-agers and they will be supportive of Paleo lunches especially if they make it themselves or you serve them great ones. It will certainly be worth the time and effort to do so and not just for the health benefits.
Giving teen-agers a choice for lunch sounds risky but when you offer to make, say meatballs or anything Paleo that is their favorite, I doubt there will be any resistance. Likewise, if they see you packing deviled eggs or burgers and potato wedges for their younger siblings, they might decide to have those too. The key is to make the right food look and taste as good or even better as the forbidden foods.
Whatever strategy you decide to follow, make sure that you always stay consistent. If your teenagers figure out that they can get to eat what they like by acting like small children throwing tantrums, they will keep doing it to get what they want. However when you stay firm, be factual, and respectful of their choices, they will learn and appreciate your meal planning and preparation efforts.
Rule of thumb: do not make food an argument. If they don’t want it, send them to bed hungry. They will learn to appreciate food when the pangs of hunger set in.
One effective way to get your teen-agers and other children excited about Paleo is to get them to plan a meal and prepare it themselves from washing vegetables to chopping peeling, slicing and dicing and eventually cleaning up. Let your teens take charge of one of the family’s meals. This will be a great way to help them get hooked on Paleo and practice their basic cooking skills.
