PSYCHOSOCIAL SCREENING

During the psychosocial screening, undertaken at the beginning of the comprehensive low vision examination visit, psychologists and their supervised trainees may encourage family members who accompany patients to be a part of this brief interview that is a component of the day's activities. (A sample section from this screening is presented in “Sample Questions from The Chicago Lighthouse Psychosocial Screening Interview.”) The screening, usually 30 minutes long, is a blend of questions related to how patients are functioning at home and in the community, and an evaluation of how they are handling whatever emotional responses to loss of vision and the threat to independence that they may be experiencing. This step assists the low vision clinic's treatment team members (including optometrists and occupational therapists) who will subsequently work with the patient throughout their treatment. The screening also indicates areas of difficulty in functioning as well as the patient's readiness for any given rehabilitation strategy prescribed.
