While reading through Enron’s original and impressively twisted SEC filings (many of which the SEC disregarded), there’s really no way to avoid a massive headache. Enron ultimately issued an explanatory statement on its Web site that miraculously managed to be more convoluted that the transactions themselves.37 Unfortunately, reading the explanation of its actions, furnished under federal request, you get the same headache. Enron counted on a lot of headaches hampering investigations when they created their paper labyrinth in the first place. And it counts on it them still, as thousands of investigation documents and hours pile up. It counts on people giving up.
