12 The massacre of Bronte as told by the garibaldino Cesare Abba in the book From Quarto to Volturno:

Bixio in a few days had left his heart in pieces, up to the villages of Etna erupted in nefarious riots. It was here and there, a terrible apparition. At Bronte, division of assets, fires, vengeance, orgies to obscure the sun, and in addition viva to Garibaldi. Bixio took with him a battalion, two; on horse, in carriage, on wagons, arrives who arrives up there, but go. Walking was a continuous meeting of the people who survived the massacres. They pleaded, they stretched their hands to him, to the officers, someone shouting: «Ohi do not go, they will kill you too!» But Bixio advanced for two days, covering the street with those who could no longer bear, arrives with a few: the sight of things are sufficient enough to poke your eyes out in horror! Houses burnt with their masters inside; people slaughtered in the streets; in the seminaries the youngsters slain at the feet of the elderly Rector; one of the horde is there his teeth tear the breasts of a murdered girl. « Charge them with the bayonet!». Those fierce ones are taken, tied along with so many that you have to work hard to reduce yourself to choosing the saddest ones, a hundred Then a proclamation of Bixio is launched like a tongue of fire: «Bronte guilty of crimes against humanity and a state of siege is declared: surrender the weapons or die: dissolved the City Hall, National Guard, everything: sets a war tax for every hour until order is restored ». And the offenders are judged by a War Council. Six are going to their death, shot in the back with the lawyer Lombardi, an old man of sixty, head of the infamous horde. Among the executors of the sentence there were some sweet and kind young people, doctors, artists in red shirts. What pain! Bixio watched with his eyes full of tears.

After Bronte, Randazzo, Castiglione, Regalbuto, Centorbi, and other villages, they saw him, felt the grip of his mighty hand, they cried after him: “Savage!”, but no one dared to move.
