Marian Annett proposed that the prevalence of right-handedness and left-hemisphere speech resulted from a single gene (RS+) that impaired the right hemisphere. (Photo courtesy of Marian Annett.)

Chris McManus challenged Annett’s RS hypothesis, arguing instead that there was a dominant gene (D) for right-handedness and a recessive gene (C) for either-handedness. McManus elaborated his thinking about handedness and laterality in professional articles and in his 2002 book, Right Hand, Left Hand: The Origins of Asymmetry in Brains, Bodies, Atoms, and Cultures.
