Agam IV

In the afternoon, Arik Sharon’s reconnaissance team goes on a scouting expedition which will have considerable influence on the IDF’s canal crossing. Rafi Bar Lev and Yitzhak Agam’s company spends hours observing the Egyptian dispositions north of the Great Bitter Lake. Further north, the Egyptian Second Army is dug-in. To the south, there is no significant movement in the direction where the Egyptian Third Army operates. This area is clearly the “seam” between the two armies. Yoav Brom, the unit commander, asks permission to penetrate deeper and check how far south the Second Army extends.

“We were surprised at the way Yoav directed the operation,” Yitzhak Agam will later relate. “We moved towards the canal, keeping up a constant shooting match with the Egyptian positions to our north. This way we pinpointed their southernmost positions. We advanced over dunes to the Great Bitter Lake without any serious difficulty. It was by this route that we, a week later, guided the forces that established our bridgehead across the canal.”

Yoav Brom’s reconnaissance unit continues along the lake to its northern end, passing an IDF stronghold where the Israeli flag still flies. A tank is sent to the fortress’ entrance but there is no sign of life. Yoav forbids entry for fear of mines or booby-traps. Darkness catches up with the scouts somewhere between the lifeless stronghold and the tip of the Great Bitter Lake. They organize for overnight camp at the only place where, on the fourth day of the war, an IDF force is on the water-line. “The Egyptians didn’t attack, but it was a scary night,” Yitzhak Agam will say. “We sat inside Egyptian lines. With starlight glasses, the only pair we had, we saw them moving around and could easily spot the silhouettes of their tanks.”
