After the revolution the Slavic pagan spirit became subdued for a time, although in the Stalinist period some research into the ancient Slavic religion was carried out with the approval of Stalin, apparently in the search for some pre-Christian national ethos. Under Stalin’s successors there came signs of an appreciable reawakening of Slavic pagan consciousness in Russia. There was a distinct lunatic fringe to this movement, consisting of such figures as Valerii Emelianov (1929–1999), a crazed prophet with extreme anti-Judaic and anti-Masonic views, who in the 1980s spent six years in a Leningrad mental hospital being treated for schizophrenia after being convicted of killing his wife and chopping her up with an axe. In 1989, three years after his release, he formed a pagan community in Moscow, and in 1991 he cofounded an organization called the Slavic Council. After several more sojourns in mental hospitals he died in 1999.3

A near contemporary of Emelianov and also a proponent of the neo-pagan movement was the artist and writer Igor Ivanovich Sinyavin (1937–2000). From the predominantly abstract and “modern” style of his paintings and the fact that he spent a number of years in the United States, one might have expected him to have had a left-liberal, democratic outlook, but in fact he became a radical traditionalist and fervent Russian nationalist, as is clear from his book The Path to Truth (Stezya Pravdy), published in 1996, in which he wrote:
