Bariatric Surgery Procedures

The three most commonly performed bariatric procedures offered to adolescents are: adjustable gastric band (AGB), sleeve gastrectomy (VSG) and roux-en-y gastric bypass (RYBP) [59] (Fig. 7.7). More detailed descriptions and discussions of these procedures are in Chap. 11 Bariatric Surgery. There is no consensus on the best operation for any given individual however, FDA approval for the AGB is for age 18 and older. The more complex duodenal switch/biliopancreatic diversion is not recommended because of the protein and nutrient malabsorption that often accompanies this procedure. The two procedures most commonly performed on adolescents are the vertical VSG and gastric bypass, both usually performed from a laparoscopic approach.
