Evie lay in bed curled around Sassy, kneading her warm fur. A long-buried memory of her mother stroking her, comforting her, pierced her so suddenly that she caught her breath with the pain.

“Mommy!”

Sassy jumped off the bed and Evie was alone on the top bunk.
