First and foremost, women have to be unflappable regardless of whether they are working in a Club-based organization or one that is more inclusive of their contributions. A woman’s strengths must be channeled through directness and conciseness rather than brawn. All of the successful women executives I have interviewed singled out bad behavior from women as the most detrimental to their ability to achieve the company’s goals. Although screaming and cursing from a male executive could be perceived as strength, these behaviors in women almost invariably incite negative labeling and diminished perceptions of women’s competence. Double standards have to be addressed within your organization in the same way biases do.

What worked for me was to ask the person who was speculating about my business relationship with my boss, or a promotion, or a current assignment, “How is this different from my peers who have a good relationship with my boss or who were recently promoted?” A woman executive I interviewed who leads global marketing for a top network services provider described how she used humor to point out the suspicions her promotion raised with a male colleague who speculated she got the promotion because she was “good-looking.” Her male colleague would have readily accepted a male peer’s promotion over her promotion, and the woman executive recognized that she had the responsibility to address it. Her response was “You think I’m good-looking? Thank you for the compliment.” She not only raised the awareness of the behavior, but gained a life-long supporter in the end.
