The new and improved Rendezvous continued to attract such acts as Benny Goodman, Bob Crosby, Lawrence Welk, Phil Harris, and Stan Kenton. During World War II, other big names made appearances, including Les Brown, Harry James, Spade Cooley, Nat King Cole, Guy Lombardo, Xavier Cugat, and Johnny Mercer. The building once again succumbed to fire on August 7, 1966, and was not rebuilt.

Major storms in 1928, 1938, and 1939 caused serious flooding on the peninsula and islands. The 1939 storm took 500 feet from the outer end of McFadden’s Wharf and virtually destroyed the Balboa Pier. The 35-foot Jolly Tom capsized, drowning one person, and the 140-foot Paragon ran aground and sank in the harbor. In the 1980s, a series of El Niño storms caused high tides over eight feet, again causing major flooding.
