This position can give the false impression that the pelvis is anchored correctly, but someone trying to sit this way with a naturally rotated pelvis will find it extremely uncomfortable.

Although to our modern-day eyes these children may appear rigid and stiff, in actuality they are comfortably relaxed when supported by aligned bones.

Simply telling a child to “sit up straight” does little to solve the problem.

Typically, at the sound of these oft-repeated words, children lift up their chests, holding themselves up with tension in muscles that tire quickly. Within just moments they sink down into collapse again.

Only by learning how to anchor the pelvis and tether the rib cage into place with an engaged core can a child successfully sit up with comfort and ease. The good news is that children who have participated in pilot projects have demonstrated that they enjoy learning how their bodies are intended to work as much as they love learning how to sit comfortably, without effort and struggle.
