Although she knew Mr. Darcy’s temperament was far different to his aunt’s, Elizabeth had still expected Pemberley to resemble Rosings Park in its décor. However, as the carriage approached the front entrance, the house was revealed to be grand but without pretention. Its lines and proportions were elegant, and it was set perfectly within the surrounding grounds. No doubt the interior would be similarly free of the gilt details and excessively baroque ornamentation so prevalent at Rosings. Despite being difficult and unpleasant, Mr. Darcy was a man of refinement and taste.

Several footmen hastened out of the entrance as the carriage approached, followed by a simply dressed girl whom Elizabeth guessed was Mr. Darcy’s sister. A broad grin demonstrating her eagerness to see her brother, she rushed down the path with far less decorum than Elizabeth would expect from the kind of haughty girl Mr. Wickham had described.

As soon as the coach rolled to a stop, Mr. Darcy threw open the door and jumped out so he could embrace his sister. Elizabeth exchanged glances with Jane. Who would have believed him capable of such exuberance? The more time she spent with Mr. Darcy, the less she felt she actually knew him.

A footman placed a stool next to the carriage, and Mr. Darcy immediately released his sister so he could help the ladies out, introducing each in turn. Georgiana Darcy’s expression grew far more reserved as she greeted the strangers, but Elizabeth could see this was the result of shyness rather than pride.

As the sisters greeted Miss Darcy, a tall figure came bounding out of the house like an eager puppy. Mr. Bingley! He pumped Mr. Darcy’s hand vigorously and bowed to the all the ladies. However, his gaze was immediately drawn to Jane, who blushed and looked down when their eyes met. But her lips formed a soft smile. Was she embarrassed at Mr. Bingley’s attentions or concerned that their reunion would be the subject of gossip and speculation?

Mr. Darcy was completely still, observing his friend and Jane—his expression inscrutable. Did he disapprove? Would he try to separate them? No, surely not after he had gone to some trouble to bring them together again!

Others emerged from the house at a more sedate pace. Elizabeth stifled an urge to groan. Miss Bingley was gliding toward the party in a gaudy orange gown far more ornate than required by the occasion.

“Mr. Darcy!” Miss Bingley drawled. “It has been too long since we have seen you!” She lifted her hand to him as if expecting him to kiss the back of it. His face carefully blank, Mr. Darcy had little choice but to follow suit. However, he seemed displeased at being forced into the position. Mr. and Mrs. Hurst followed and exchanged greetings with the group—Mr. Hurst with a bored, half-awake expression and Mrs. Hurst with a sneer. Miss Bingley’s greeting to Jane was superficially warm, but Elizabeth was not fooled.

Mr. Bingley beamed happily at everyone, but Mr. Darcy’s expression suggested he was pained by his guests’ ill manners.
