“So, I’ve gotta ask - did you physically see Brian in the coffin? I mean, are you sure that it was him that died?” Dave asked.

“Yes, I’m sure. And before you ask, I’m sure that it was him that I married and lived with all those years. It was the same Brian Tanner that we saw at church yesterday. The same exact person, born on the same day, with the same birth mark on his…”

“Yes, yes, I remember the whole explosion there,” he said, “I’ve got to admit that your whole story holds water. Everything you know about me is true. Everything you’ve said about Brian sounds a lot like Brian, but the fact is - I’ve never met you before and Brian simply isn’t dead.”

She lowered her head onto the counter and closed her eyes.

“So then tell me what happened. I’ve got a whole lifetime of experiences that don’t seem to agree with the world around me. Did you say he wasn’t married to anyone in the past several years?”

“Yes, and he also has worked third shift at one of the mail sorting facilities for the last ten years at least,” he said, “I know this because it’s been his excuse for not coming to Wednesday evening services. Comparing this world to the one you’ve been describing to me, I can see why he’s not dead. Without a family waiting for him at home, Brian chose the nightshift. He missed the traffic accident altogether.”

She lifted her head from the counter and propped her face in both palms. Dave watched her sadly as she shook her head.

“I just need to locate my son. Then I can figure out what happened,” she said.
