After dropping off the children, Lizabella entered their sitting room, where she quickly removed her outer garments. She took a seat at her dressing table, and as she straightened her hair, she mulled over earlier events. It was so sweet of him to make the snowman with her.
When he’d kissed her, a flutter of something settled in her belly. Part of her believed she should feel guilty for enjoying his kiss, but they were married now. In a couple of months, he would want to do a lot more than kiss—he would want to consummate their marriage. She loved Michael, but he was gone, and nothing would bring him back. She had taken vows to love, honor, cherish, and obey her husband, so kissing him was right and good.
For her child’s sake, she needed to make this marriage work. Michael would always hold a special place in her heart, and if he had lived, they would have had a good marriage. Now, she needed to work on having a good marriage with Marcus instead.
Glancing at the clock on the mantel, she realized she’d woolgathered for quite some time, and needed to go downstairs before her husband started worrying. She quickly finished straightening her hair and went to join him.
Lizabella entered the drawing room, and he grinned. “Ah…I was beginning to think you weren’t going to join me. Please, sit beside me and have a nice cup of cider. Cook made some gingerbread for us as well. They’re still warm from the oven.”
Once she sat on the sofa, he handed her a cup and several cakes. She took a bite. “Oh, these are delicious. I haven’t had gingerbread in years. I’m sorry I’m late. To be honest with you, I caught myself daydreaming over the fun we had making the snowman.”
He chuckled. “I actually enjoyed it myself too. I’m glad we did it. After you finish your cider and gingerbread, I want you to go upstairs and rest, so you’ll be ready for our sleigh ride this afternoon.” He stood. “I need to go over some reports Hatcher left me, so I shall see you at two.” Before leaving, he kissed her cheek, then sauntered out.
When she returned to her room, she tried to sleep. After laying on the bed for ten minutes, eyes wide open, she decided to read instead. Sitting in one of the comfortable chairs in front of the fire, she soon became engrossed in her book. After a fair amount of time had passed, she glanced at the ormolu clock. Goodness, she’d read for two hours, and it was nearly time to go downstairs for luncheon.
When she entered the dining room, Marcus was already there. He stood and came around the table and helped her to her seat. Once the footman served them and left, he asked, “Did you have a nice rest?”
“I was too excited to sleep, so I read instead. I started a new book, and became so wrapped up in the story, I forgot to watch the time.
