Chapter 5
Christine and I freaked out on the phone. It didn't take me long to decide I was going to St. Martin. She tried to talk me out of it, saying people were trying to get off the islands, not fly to them.
I didn't care if there was a hurricane or not. Francois was in trouble. It struck me that for the first time in our relationship, he didn't just want or love me. He needed me.
And I had no idea where to start.
I called the hotel, wanting an update and also desperate to know if the police had been called. Christine hadn't stayed on the line very long. I had guessed that a long-distance call from St. Martin to Haleiwa, Hawaii was very expensive.
There was no answer. I went online to get a phone number for the local police. Again no response. I wondered if the lines were down in the islands and a news flash reported both electricity and phone lines had been shut down by local authorities in St. Martin during the worst part of the evening storm, but would be back up within a few hours.
Meanwhile, I was going out of my mind.
I suddenly stopped. If the lines were down, how the hell did Christine call me? Maybe she just beat the clock. I had to stop acting so neurotic. I had to think.
Like any self-respecting man I did what I thought was right. I called my best friend. Leilani was fantastic. She came right over even though it was two A.M.
We hugged at the door. We kept CNN on TV and the reports were increasingly alarming, but the hurricane was still on the approach. The prediction was Monday.
"If you can fly out today, you should be able to get there tonight or tomorrow morning at the latest," Leilani said.
She went online to organize tickets and I did something I'd never done before. I was about to trespass on Francois's secret life.
I let myself into his office. It felt weird being in here without him. He'd once told me he never bothered locking his door against me because he'd set little traps for months and I'd never gone snooping. I was about to shatter my clean record.
His office was immaculate. Computers lined the walls. Where the hell did I start? I turned on the first one and couldn't get past the security code. Same with the second and the third computer, too.

Leilani came rushing in. "I have you booked on a flight to Los Angeles at ten o'clock, then a connecting flight to Miami. Both on American Airlines. American Eagle is the only airline flying into St. Martin and they don't fly again until tomorrow. I've booked you into a motel near the airport in Miami for the night. You can walk right over to the terminal first thing in the morning."
"You're amazing," I said.
"I know. What are you doing?"
I shrugged. "I'm stuck before I could even get started."
She looked at the locked computers, tried entering a couple of passwords.
