Chapter Six
With love came jealousy.
It had not escaped eagle-eyed Puck’s notice that half the court was infatuated with his master. Whenever Oberon went down to the river to bathe, the surrounding bushes and the branches overhead would bristle with spies, drinking in the sight of water trickling down his strong thighs. On those occasions when there were ambassadors to be greeted and Puck was given free rein to dress Oberon up in such a way as to show off his beauty to the fullest, soft sighs would echo from every corner of the throne room.
What was so infuriating was that Oberon didn’t seem to notice. He stalked amongst his subjects convinced they did his bidding out of fear or loyalty to his house, totally oblivious to all the longing, cow-eyed stares.
Every single one of them would happily drop to their knees the moment you asked it of them, my sweet, stupid king.
With jealousy came fear. Granted, Oberon’s fascination with him had in no way declined, but lasting monogamy was a rare, rare thing amongst immortals such as they.
What could he do to cement his place in Oberon’s affections? Was there something he could give him that no one else could? Wit, yes; charm, yes; resourcefulness, yes; he had all those. But so did many of the simpering creatures who surrounded his master on a daily basis—although Puck flattered himself that he had said qualities in uncommonly even proportion, and that he conducted himself with more dignity than most.
But there had to be something…
Hmm. His master had a taste for pain. Perhaps he’d appreciate a partner who shared his proclivities? After all, Puck didn’t mind pain, not that much. Not in small doses. And he was always up for new experiences.
Yes, he’d do it.
* * * * *
When Puck had first made the suggestion, Oberon had been taken aback. He’d been disinclined, at first, but the notion had grown in his mind like a weed, and ultimately—of course—he had consented.
“Punish me,” Puck whined. “Punish me, master, I want…oh…”
“Oh, shush. You’re distracting me.”
“I want to be your slave, master.”
“You want no such thing,” Oberon replied, clicking his tongue in disgust. “Crass, self-indulgent creature.”
The next time the lash fell, Puck’s cry was ear-splitting. Oberon did not pretend that playing the enraged regent was not an appealing change of pace, nor that Puck did not make a lovely sight, arms up, wrists bound, grinding his thin body against the pole to which he had been tied.
“Shameless wretch,” Oberon intoned, no longer able to resist the urge to step forward and press his front against Puck’s back. His prisoner’s breath was shaky and uneven as Oberon’s claws curved across his torso in a proprietary fashion.
“I do,” Puck said, softly. “Provided I wouldn’t have to share you with anyone.”
For a moment, Oberon went still before resuming his caresses. “Titania has no part of me.”
“I know. I do know.”
“Then who…”
A shrug of those narrow shoulders. “You are our king. You belong to everyone. I would it were otherwise.
