Back in Pennsylvania, Eve still came around once a week to clean the bath and the windows and once in a while managed to wipe down the floors, but according to her brother, she was now somewhat interested in a young man from their district, who reciprocated her affections. Josiah was relieved, and so was Beth, though she wouldn’t admit it even to herself. Her relationship with Josiah was somewhat formal, but at least there were few moments of hostility. In fact, none that she could recall since returning to Pennsylvania from her visit with Anna.

One day as she sorted through the shop mail, she found a letter addressed to her in an unknown handwriting from a rural return address in Ohio. Curious, she opened it as she sat to have coffee with the men.

First, she bit her lower lip and then she broke into a smile. “It’s from Sam.”

“Who’s Sam?” Josiah asked as he bit into a cruller Shorty’s mother had sent in for their break.

“Abe’s bruder. I met him at the wedding and then I saw him when I was in Ohio. Nice guy. You probably met him yourself, Josiah. Tall, handsome, curly brown hair—”

“No one like that at the wedding,” he said with a grunt.

“Oh jah. He was there all right. Followed me around. Sure you don’t remember him? He looked like some English actor—”

“No one there like that. What does he want?”

“To visit us. Me, specifically.”

“I suppose he’s single.”

“Well, jah. I don’t think he’d be writing me if he was a married man.”

“What does he want anyway?”

Shorty was grinning, enjoying the discussion.

“Well, let me see. I’ll read a little to you. ‘It was so nice getting to know you when you were here. The party was not nearly as boring with you there8.’ ” She looked over at Josiah, who had a frown down to his waist.

“ ‘I would like to visit Pennsylvania and see you again. I can only stay about a month, but perhaps I could stay with your family and do some work for them while I’m there. I don’t want to be a nuisance. I could come out in August, since my daed has plenty of help till the harvest. Please let me know.’ ”

She stopped reading and grinned over at the men.

“I don’t see how you could put someone up for all that time,” Josiah started. “Who knows how gut a worker the man is. Sounds like he’s trying to get out of his responsibilities at home, if you ask me.”

“Gee, I don’t think I did,” she said coyly as she slipped the folded paper back in the envelope and put it in her pocket.

“How did he sign off?” Shorty asked, amused.

“I think, ‘with love,’ ” she said, glancing over at Josiah, who reached for a second cruller. “I thought you were watching your weight, Josiah,” she added.

“It doesn’t much matter,” he said in a low voice.

“Me thinks you’re jealous,” Shorty said, pushing back on his chair until he was balancing on only the two back legs.
