Chapter 18

Colt

It was finally the Fourth of July. I couldn’t wait to share the festival with Callie. She said she hadn’t experienced festivals before, so I wanted to make sure she got a taste of them all in Edenton. Next to the Harvest Festival, The Fourth of July Festival was my favorite. I parked in front of Callie’s cabin and jumped out, giddy to see her. I saw her every day, but the excitement never seemed to fade away.

“Are ya ready to go?” I asked when she opened the door. When I glanced at her, I gasped. She looked stunning with her hair piled up on top of her head in a messy bun and wearing a coral-colored dress with pale yellow flowers on it. It went down to just about her knees. She paired it with a pair of cowgirl boots. “Wow.” I suddenly felt parched.

“You like it?”

“I do.”

“Coral is my favorite color.” She grinned at me.

“It looks amazing on ya.”

“Thank you.” I caught a glimpse of her blush before she gazed down at the ground.

“Ready?”

“Yes. I’m so excited.” She beamed.

“You’re going to love this. It’s one of my favorites.” I really was more excited to spend the entire day with her. I didn’t care where it was. I parked the truck in the first space I could find in town. “Looks like we are gonna have to hoof it a bit. That okay? I can always drop ya off closer and find a place to park.”

“Walking is fine.” The way her lips turned up into a smile melted me.

As we made our way to the county courthouse, we took time to chat with people. Anyone with whom Callie wasn’t familiar, I made sure to introduce her. We stopped in at Courageous Café and Bakery to see Marci and Caitlyn. They agreed to meet up with us that evening for the fireworks.

When we got to the crowd surrounding the front of the courthouse, I turned to Callie. “This is awesome. The festival kicks off with an annual reading of the Declaration of Independence. The guy who reads it is dressed in 1776 attire.” I glanced over at Callie. She wore a huge grin. I shrugged. “What?”

“Nothing.” She giggled. “You’re just adorable when you’re excited.”

“I’m sorry.” I ran my fingers through my hair. “I love history.”

“I do, too.” She beamed.

After the reading, we headed down to the waterfront. There were vendors set up all over the park just opposite the water.

“Oh. There’s Olivia. Can we go say hi?”

“We can do anything ya like today, Callie.” I grinned at her.

She grabbed my hand and pulled me over to Olivia’s booth. “Hey, Olivia!” Callie called out before reaching out to give Olivia a hug.

“Hey, Cal. How are ya?” Olivia had started calling Callie that a few weeks ago. I wasn’t sure why. “Hey, Colt.”

“Hi, Olivia. What do you have this go-round?”

“Just a few pieces. Have a look.” She motioned to the table.

“Oh. Olivia. They’re amazing! Oh. I love this one.” Callie pointed to a landscape of a pond surrounded by trees and flowers of various colors.
