Suffixes, always at the end of a word, inform you what is being done with a specific body system or part. The suffix indicates a condition, disease, or procedure.
1. The Most Important Suffixes
Suffix = Meaning
-ac, -al, -ic, -ous, -tic = Pertaining to, related to
-algia, -dynia = Discomfort, pain
-arche = Beginning
-ate, -ize = Subject to
An example is Myalgia (muscle pain).
-cele = Protrusion (hernia)
-cidal, -cide = Something which kills or destroys
-cle, -cule, -ule, -ulus = Small
-cyte(s) = Cell(s)
