Audiences get involved in the narrative universe. The attraction of The Avengers is the “felt perception of the movement of the commodity across a personalized, and yet collectively acculturated space” (Isaacs, 2014, p. 220). Audiences and superheroes share a common space within the mega-narration of the Cinematic Universe.
There is no chronologic continuity, because the films are placed in different historical times and they can be consumed in an order different from the chronology of their release dates. But the narration of every single film offers audiences access points or touchpoints that can be used individually. Transtextual references establish a connection to the mega-narration of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The S.H.I.E.L.D. agents in particular are responsible for building connections, because they appear in every film. This way every single character—Tony Stark/Iron Man , Bruce Banner/Hulk, Thor, Scott Lang/Ant-Man and Steve Rogers/Captain America—exists in a story world of its own right, while at the same time they exist in the mega-narration of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, in a universe together with the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents such as Nick Fury, Phil Coulson, Hawkeye, Peggy Carter and Natasha Romanov/Black Widow. It is up to the viewers how deeply they want to participate in the fictional universe that is built up not only by the films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and its expansion into television drama series, but also by the comic books and computer games.
