EIGHTEEN
I came to my senses in Toyâs strong young arms just seconds later, but of course I didnât let on right away. Iâm only half as stupid as I look, if I do say so myself. Toy was born to be a hero and raised to be a gentleman. He scooped me off my feet and carried me into Agnesâs living room (I made sure that my head was resting against his shoulder), where he laid me gently on her sofa. Then he patted me ever softly on my cheeks with hands that were both manly, and well-manicured.
âMagdalena,â he practically cooed, âMagdalena, are you in there?â
âOf course sheâs in there,â Agnes said. âMaybe she really did faint, but sheâs faking it now. You can always tell by her breath.â
âHer breath?â
âYeah. When she pretends to be asleep, or unconscious â which happens more than you think â her breath smells like rotten pumpkins.â
âIt does not,â I said, and sat up so quickly that I bumped heads with poor Chief Toy.
âYou see,â Agnes chortled. âI told you she was faking.â
âI was not.â
Toyâs blue eyes twinkled as he rubbed his forehead. âActually, I can detect the faint odour of last yearâs jack-o-lantern.â
âVery funny. But seriously, am I remembering correctly â before I fainted dead away â that the snake was a rattler?â
âThatâs right,â Toy said. âA rather large one at that. Nice and fat. Agnes here is quite a brave little trooper, a real hero in my book. She needs to be given some sort of award. I donât know of any other woman who would have remained as calm and collected under those circumstances as she did. Why, when she called meââ
âWhat about me?â I said.
âYou fainted,â Agnes said. âDead away. And you were so terrified from just hearing the word ârattlesnakeâ that you remained passed out until after Toy carried you in from the kitchen.â
âWell, the snake was attached to my waistband. I ought to get some credit for that.â
âLadies,â Toy said gently, âI do believe that we have lost sight of whatâs most important here.â
âThat I saved her life?â Agnes said.
âThat I ruined her TV dinners?â I said, and then slapped my mouth. âOops, that just slipped out. Iâm sorry, Agnes.â
Agnes smiled. âDid the Devil make you say that?â
I smiled back. âNo, those particular thoughts Iâm keeping to myself.â
Toy cleared his throat loudly. âAhem. Weâve lost sight of the fact that even the most intelligent rattlesnake is incapable of opening and closing a car door. Therefore, one can safely surmise that the snake in question was placed in Magdalenaâs car by someone who wished to do her harm.
âAlso, I think that itâs possible there could be a link to the snake and the three previous acts of vandalism within the last twelve hours. Itâs pretty clear to me that someone, or some party of persons, was not happy with Herniaâs Fourth Annual Billy Goat Gruff Festival.â
âWhat about the bodies found in my cousin Samâs dumpster?â I said. âDo you think that thereâs a connection there?â
Toy cocked his head.
