Reunion

Allan took a long stretch as he awoke the next morning in his king-sized bed. As he did so, he glanced at the clock on the night stand. Nine o’clock? Maureen must have turned off the alarm, he thought as he felt the empty space beside him. I’d better get up and….what am I thinking? I’m not going in today. Today’s my…

“Happy birthday, Allan,” Maureen said cheerily as she brought in a breakfast tray full with generous helpings of his favorites―scrambled eggs, sausage patties, grits, blueberry pancakes, fried potatoes, corn muffins and a large glass of orange juice, graced by a yellow rose and napkin. “I know―not until you’ve taken care of that morning mouth. Still, you have been blessed to see another birthday, and we’ll be here to share it with you. Now, get in there and freshen up a little. I don’t want you to disappoint Mrs. Morris after the effort she put into making you this breakfast.” Bending over to kiss him on the cheek anyway, she turned and left the bedroom.

After a quick splash of water on his face and a gargle of Listerine, Allan dove into his breakfast with relish. The sausage had just a hint of crispiness to accentuate its spicy taste. The butter and maple syrup oozed from the pancakes as he savored their lightness along with the tartness of the blueberries as they rolled around in his mouth. The fried potatoes had just the right amount of pepper and onions, but without the excess grease. The eggs were hard-scrambled to his taste, with the green peppers he always enjoyed mixed in. And the corn muffins―that fresh-from-the-oven aroma warmed his nostrils as he put some apple jelly on them. His grunts and groans of happiness complimented Mrs. Morris on the excellent job she did in the kitchen. It had been a long time since he’d slept in late enough to enjoy something like this, and he savored every bite. Now this is a way to start off a birthday, he thought to himself, smiling.

Downstairs, the activity was well under way. Maureen, Mrs. Morris and Bernie were collaborating on the barbecue luncheon menu, getting everything ready to go once Maureen and Allan left for the airport. Sherman and Josh were downstairs in the recreation room, putting the finishing touches on the stage and the other props for “Club Christopher.” Champ and Russell called to give an update on the food for the evening menu. They were running slightly behind schedule, but they were sure they’d make it there while Daddy was out. M&M was on the line with Vickie about the packages, confirming the time to bring them over. Vickie had arrived early that morning and was acting as coordinator for those family members who had yet to arrive, taking messages and lining up the final details about the show.

“Any more word about the programs?”

“I just checked on them, Vickie. They’re ready now, I’ll have them when we get there.”

“Do you need any help with the collages?”

“Yeah―my car’s going to be full.
