Martin Allan Christopher (March 28, 1948)
It was time for a break. Martin casually moved the paperwork to one side of his desk while kicking off his shoes with careless abandon, put his feet up on it, and leaned back in the leather-covered chair with a sigh. The pace had been picking up around the main office, due largely to the plans to open a new store in Evergreen Park. Getting the capital for it had been easy given the success of Asante Recordsâ four existing stores in Evanston, South Shore, the Lincoln Park area and the West Side; fourteen years of hard work had continued to pay off. The use of existing structures for those stores had worked out well for them, but now they felt ready to undergo something different; to build a store from scratch.
Having two of his brothers in related fields to this venture proved to be a godsend for him. Marshall had agreed to do the drawings and blueprints for the store, and Joshâs contracting crew was ready to handle the construction portion. Currently, the main task at hand was securing the land and the purchase of the business license and associated permits. Terry had scouted the area immediately surrounding Evergreen Plaza as well as the business districts along Western Avenue and 95th Street for a suitable location; his knack for finding the best locations had been one of the key factors in the success of Asante Records. He had left after lunch to meet with the owners of the parcel of land they were interested in to negotiate a price. If traffic hadnât held him up, he would probably be there now.
Marty looked over at the humidor and pipe rack on top of his credenza for a long moment. Occasions like these, especially the waiting part, would have him puffing on his pipe to ease the tension or pressure of a new project/sales promotion. âNo, not yet,â he said, turning his head away. To be able to do that told him just how far heâd come, considering the years that he smoked two packs of Kool cigarettes a day. Fortunately for him the concerns of his doctor, his children and Terry persuaded him to make this change in his habits. He hadnât completely quit smoking the way his father had. He still smoked a pipe occasionally, but for him this had been an accomplishment considering where he had come from. It would take a lot more pressure these days to send him to nicotine for coping with a situation.
His mind went back to the calls he received from his children earlier that afternoon, all making reference to the same occasion. Crystal called from her office at the South Shore store to remind him of Grandpaâs birthday weekend and her need for a copy of the budget report. Dennis called from the Lincoln Park store to confirm their plans to remodel it and coordinate picking up Grandpaâs present and a gag gift. Valentine had called while
