âAre you exhausted, or do you have a little energy for one more activity?â Cade inquired after they tucked the children into their bed and the crib.
âWhat did you have in mind?â
âI was thinking we could go for a walk around the ranch,â he suggested. âAnd donât worry, we can be back before Elleâs waking hour.â
âActually, sheâs been doing much better since she started sleeping in her new crib, thanks to you.â Miranda reached out and placed her hand on his arm. âThank you for that.â
Cade felt his cheeks heat under the compliment. âIt was nothing; Iâm just sorry it took me so long to think about doing it for you and Elle.â
âYouâre really good with her, you know that? When you feed her at dinner time or when you play peek-a-boo with her on the parlor floor, I canât help but smile at how sweet you are with her.â
He let out a chuckle as he took her hand and led her out of the house. âBabies are easy. Iâm just lucky you can handle toddlers so well; if not we would be in huge trouble.â
âIâve always wanted a house full of children. I didnât expect to have three become mine nearly all at once, but Iâm grateful for however God wants to give them to me.â
âIâm glad you see it that way. Children truly are a blessing. I remind myself of that fact whenever theyâre being difficult or keeping me up at night.â Cade guided her through the trails that weaved around the pastures, making sure not to go too far from the house in case the children started to cry. âThe weather is a bit cool tonight. Do you want me to take you back to the house to get your shawl?â
âIâm fine. We donât need to go back,â Miranda assured him, but just as she said the words, he could feel a shiver shoot up her spine.
âYouâre not fine,â he objected. âIf you wonât let me take you to the house, at least let me warm you up.â Cade stopped walking and turned to face Miranda. He reached out and wrapped his arms around her. When she didnât resist, he pulled her closer, enjoying the feel of her against him.
âThat feels nice,â she cooed, as she laid her head against his chest.
âI think so, too.â Just like before, her soft, petite frame fit perfectly against his own taller, thicker one. Every time he held her, it made him feel like she was always meant to be with him. âIf I could, I would stay like this with you forever.â
âToo bad we have a house full of children and a ranch that needs our attention,â she joked with a small laugh. âWe should just be grateful for the time we have together alone.â
âThen we should make the most of it.â Cade reached out and lifted her chin, so that their eyes could meet. This was itâthis was the moment he was going to show Miranda how he felt. Slowly, he let his head drift down until his lips met hers.
