Chapter Five

Myra soon had Catherine settled in to her room in the warm and cozy farmhouse. Her room was simple, with a heavy wooden bed and a large armoire. A washstand with a smart china ewer and matching jug meant she could freshen up before bed without having to leave the room again. She fussed around putting her things into the chest of drawers and then sank gladly onto the bed. She lay staring up at the whitewashed ceiling, marveling at how so much had changed in her life in such a short period of time.

Such a short time ago she had been living in her family’s handsome town house, the respected daughter of Cornelius Parker. Her place in society had been assured. She moved in all the finest circles, enjoyed the luxuries others could only dream of. Yet in just a few tiny acts, her world had collapsed around her. She was now living in the home of two complete strangers, on the other side of America. It might as well be the other side of the world. Everything seemed so unfamiliar, yet strangely the same. He was endearing, and a little bit uncoordinated, with his big feet and huge hands. But he was astute and had a big heart, she was sure of that, and that made his physical imperfections fade into the dust. He was a good man, and she was beginning to wonder if he was the first truly good man she had ever known. Feeling safe for the first time in too long, she curled up under the covers and soon fell into a deep sleep.

She awoke to the sight of sunbeams dancing on the panes of glass in her window, and moved swiftly to pull the drapes to enjoy the vista before her. The valley looked even more beautiful to her in this early morning light. She could not wait to get outside and explore her new home. She hoped that Tom would come early so she could begin her education in how to be a Montana bride. She had the distinct feeling that her current skill set might be quite redundant.

She made her way downstairs cautiously. She could hear no sounds in the large house, but she was sure she wasn’t the first person up. She knew that only city dwellers like her slept in past sun up. She was
