Sarah watched block after block of desolation roll past the window as she and Jude drove through the city.
What she could do with a million dollars. For starters, she’d bail out the shelter and improve the lives of the poor who relied on its outreach.
Winton Cunningham’s money could buy a lot of help, but she’d read in the newspaper article that his wealth was tied up in nonliquid assets. That’s why the contributions to the foundation were so necessary for Hope House to continue. If only Winton would—
Time to end that thought. He’d been more than generous.
Now Sarah wanted more? She shook her head, feeling a bitterness latch hold deep inside her.
What was wrong?
Concern for the kids, no doubt. What would happen if the shelter were forced to shut down?
Sarah stole a quick glance at Jude. He sat back in the seat, his long legs stretched toward the pedals. With one arm draped over the steering wheel, he propped the other against the window.
“Looks like folks around here could use a little help,” he said as they passed a block of homes badly in need of repair.
“It’s that cycle of poverty. Breaking free takes effort. A dysfunctional homelife compounds the problem.”
“Sounds like you’re speaking from personal experience?”
Sarah shrugged. “Money wasn’t the issue. My mother was.”
“So that’s the reason you’re not answering her calls.”
Maybe it was the fact that she’d just come from church, but Sarah needed to talk.
“My mother kept looking for love, but always with the wrong guy. Guess my homelife wasn’t much different from the kids I pull off the street.”
“And your dad?”
“He died when I was young.”
“I’m sorry, Sarah.”
“The tough part growing up was that I never thought my mother wanted me.”
“So now you’ve become the mother you never had?”
“You mean to the teens at the shelter?” Sarah toyed with the sleeve of her jacket. “I don’t know if it’s the mothering angle or that I can relate.”
“You’re doing a good job.”
Sarah hadn’t expected the compliment.
“Since you deal so well with teens, why do you want to move on?” he asked.
Sarah looked out the window at the graffiti decorating the side of a stucco building. “The position was only for six months while Cynthia recuperated from surgery. She’s due back at the end of this month. That leaves me without a job.”
“Okay, so that explains why you applied for the orphanage position. But what about your dreams for the future?”
“Meaning?”
“A husband. Children.”
She didn’t like the direction of the conversation.
“Maybe it’s not important what I want but what the Lord wants for me.”
Jude shook his head. “You know I’m not tuned in real tight with the Lord, but it would seem to me that God asks us all the same thing. To love one another.”
Sarah turned for half a second to stare at the man beside her. He claimed a faltering relationship with the Lord, yet he knew what was important. Love was the key.
Sounded so simple.
Of course, Jude had someone to love.
And Sarah?
She vowed long ago to never repeat the mistakes her mother had made.
