Chapter 10

The paper shook in Lydia's hand as she read it, trying to remain calm and resolute, trying to keep her face straight. But so many emotions were assailing her, from every side.

Dearest Lydia,

Papa and I are home from the Chesterfields' party, and I miss you already! The house seems twice as big and twice as empty without you here. Papa spends most of his days in his rooms or out; I think he is making Mr. Whyte quite rich.

Mr. Whyte owned the local pub, which meant the Earl was drinking a great deal if Amy noticed how often he was gone and why. Then again, she might be noticing more because Lydia wasn't there to distract her.

I hope you and Manchester are having a wonderful time together. I am so happy for you both, although I wish you were closer! Still, I suppose a sister would be an unwelcome visitor on a honeymoon anyway. Arabella told me she and Benedict will be visiting friends this week, as they make their way back to Manchester Chase. It seems the absence of siblings is de rigueur on honeymoons!

In my loneliness, I've been taking longer walks and occasional rides - don't worry, I always have someone with me - and yesterday I happened upon Mr. Joseph Tilding. Do you remember him? Mr. Tilding, the Duke of Kent's cousin who owns the House on the Hill but is never in residence? Well, Joseph Tilding is his son and this Mr. Tilding has just moved into the House on the Hill until next Season.

Mr. Joseph Tilding is twenty-five years of age and quite a dashing gentleman. He has promised to take me to the lake next week for my birthday in his carriage; he has a beautiful set of matched grays which all the other young men hereabouts are practically in alt over. I shall be quite the envy of all the other young ladies in the area! Do not worry, we shall be well chaperoned. Papa does not seem to like Mr. Tilding much, although I can't imagine why not, but I know you would be relieved by his sharp eye on me since you cannot be here yourself. Still, at least Papa has not denied me my outing.

I shall miss you on my birthday most of all! Think of me fondly on the day, and be sure I will demand a most luxurious present from you now that you are a duchess.

Just seeing her sister's familiar writing had a well of homesickness rising up in Lydia's breast, not the least because she too was feeling quite lonely.

Ever since her spanking on Monday, her husband had withdrawn from her during the day. He still visited her bed every night, and nothing had changed there - he was as passionate and demanding as ever, and still left for his own bed when their passion had run its course. During the day, however, she barely saw him, and when she did, their conversation was formal and stilted.
