Chapter Six

As if what she had said had upset him, Magnus Fane was more disagreeable than he had been before and certainly grimmer.

He spoke only in monosyllables until Delysia went to bed where she lay awake in the darkness thinking about what a strange man he was.

Yet at the same time it was fascinating to be able to duel with anyone so formidable and to know that occasionally she scored points on Fleur’s behalf which, if he was being honest, he could not deny.

The next morning she received a message to say that as he would be busy until luncheontime and he would be obliged if she would keep to her sitting room and not come downstairs.

The message also informed her that he had ordered horses two for two o’clock.

That at least was some consolation!

But, as Delysia had not previously been confined to her own rooms, she felt constricted and really imprisoned, which made her angry.

However there were books to read and she knew that she would enjoy them all.

Even so she was acutely aware that the sun was shining brightly outside and she longed to be out in the fresh air.

She also in some way that she could not determine for herself resented the fact that Magnus Fane was leaving her alone and was more interested in the other things that he had to do.

At least until now he had been with her during her captivity and almost all the hours of daylight and, although she hated to admit it, she missed him.

She opened the window and leaned out, feeling the salt breeze tingling on her face.

She thought how centuries ago other women like herself must have looked out from this same window dreading the sighting of weirdly shaped Viking ships coming towards them intent on plundering everything they possessed.

It made her wonder if it was really worth fighting for one’s possessions and whether Magnus Fane valued his so much that he would risk his life for them.

It was a question that she wanted to ask him and she thought of several more that she was certain would involve an intense discussion over luncheon.

When she went downstairs, having now been told by a servant that he was waiting for her, she was aware that his mood was still dark and she did not like the expression in his eyes when he looked at her.

She felt that he was scowling at her just like the Demon King and thinking up more punishments that he could inflict upon his victim.

She told herself that she was being imaginative and set out to try to entertain him at luncheon, making provocative remarks that she felt must bring forth some robust response.

She had to admit that by the time the meal, which was only a short one, was finished Magnus Fane was still as aloof and unresponsive as he had been when they had started.

She had thought it wise in order to save time to have luncheon in her riding clothes.

Fortunately in Fleur’s trunk there had been a very attractive habit that she must have bought to ride in Rotten Row in Hyde Park.
