Chapter 11

Kyle tossed and turned that night, his mind unable to let go long enough to fall asleep.

Images of Nikki’s beautiful face, the feel of her kiss, gave way to Jordan’s pleading eyes before he died, until finally Kyle drifted into a fitful sleep, and memories he’d hidden or buried burst onto the landscape of his dreams.

Jordan’s face grew more determined. “We’re ahead of the storm,” he said. “Not like we’re going to get another chance like this. We have to win.”

Kyle argued with him, realizing now the danger they were in. “We’re risking too much. What about your sister? Your mother? Your son, Jordan? What if this doesn’t end well? We need to land.”

“We’re staying. We’re going to win.”

The wind surged ahead of the storm clouds and captured their gas balloon and wouldn’t let go, pushing them too hard and fast.

Off course.

The balloon began deflating, collapsing. Jordan worked to keep the balloon inflated, to find the right altitude to take them ahead of the storm.

They’d lost altitude rapidly, and the Mediterranean Sea would soon give way to the coastline of Italy. “We should jump while we’re over water—that way we at least have a chance of survival. We can’t survive if we hit the ground at this height.”

By the time Jordan agreed, it was almost too late.

“NO...!”

When Kyle woke, he was sitting up, covered in sweat. His own voice rang in his ears. Had he woken up the neighbors through the thin walls of his apartment? He lay there for a few moments and stared at the ceiling, afraid to fall asleep again.

Instead of risking it, he got up and went to the bathroom to splash water on his face. When he stared at the mirror, he saw Jordan’s face.

What am I doing?

When he got back in bed, he flipped on the nightstand lamp and dug around in the drawer until he found his Bible. He hadn’t opened the pages in far too long, but now was as good a time as any to start reading again. Maybe that would put his mind to rest, and he could sleep without the nightmares.

What was he doing wooing the sister of his best friend, who’d kept them apart before he’d died? Kyle believed she was over what had happened and no longer blamed him, but as guilt snaked around his heart, he realized he hadn’t forgiven himself.

He blamed himself for everything that had happened, but especially for leaving Nikki and Michael when they needed him the most. He’d been too weak in character to look them in the eyes.

Kyle bowed his head and prayed, allowing his heart to cry out to God, to finally hand over what was there all along. What he’d tried to ignore. Act as if it didn’t matter, as if it wasn’t eating away at him every day.

Please help me to let go of blaming myself. Of the guilt for my part in hurting Nikki and Michael. Help me to be a better man. And please, if we shouldn’t be together, if I would only hurt her again, put a stop to this.
