seemed to preclude any arguments. “So go upstairs, and get your things. I"ll wait for you in the buggy.” Jonah watched his father leave through the front door without waiting for an answer, as though Jonah wouldn"t think of doing anything other than what he wanted. And why should he? Jonah had always done exactly what his father wanted, so why would he think anything else?

“Jonah.” He heard Raine"s voice behind him. “I saw your father leave. Are you okay?”

“I don"t know. He"s waiting for me to get my things and join him in the buggy for the ride back to the community.” The thought left Jonah feeling cold. He was just starting to get used to things here.

He had friends here, but he also had friends back in the community.

“Your brother had to make nearly this exact same choice, and you know what he did and how things turned out.” He could see the way that Raine could barely meet his eyes. “I don"t want to influence you, and asking you to stay would be doing that, but I have to say that if you go, I"ll miss you.” He heard the slight crack in Raine"s voice and knew he felt the same way.

“I was hoping I wouldn"t have to make this decision right away.” Jonah felt a little whiny, but things had changed so quickly.

One minute he was in the truck with Raine, laughing and happy, and less than an hour later he"d had to face his father, and now the man wanted him to go home.

“You don"t have to make this decision now. This is your life, Jonah, and for once, you get to make the decisions. A few days ago, you told me that you were a man. Well, this is your chance to act like it.” Raine raised his eyebrows and waited. Jonah didn"t know what to do, but knew he had to make a decision quickly. Looking out the window, he could see his father looking out of the window of the buggy and then turning to face forward again.

“You"re right.” Walking toward the front of the house, Jonah paused at the base of the staircase. Stopping there, he peered out the
