AMERICAN HOTEL AND AMERICAN THEATER BUILDING

Built in 1907, the American Hotel and American Theater Building was located at Market and Seventh Streets. The building was of somewhat unusual construction. The hotel’s two high-rise towers surrounded and dwarfed the much smaller theater building, but all three were joined as one building.

Many of the hotel’s rooms featured a private bathroom, a novelty and luxury at that time. Harry S Truman once stayed there. The theater was known for many years as the place to see touring Broadway plays and productions. A lower-level restaurant called the Rathskeller was a popular place to dine in the 1930s.

Sudden plans to demolish the building were announced in 1953. A parking lot was built on the site. The area later was incorporated into the Gateway Mall.
