Chapter Eleven

A sunny afternoon by the family swimming pool turned to cooler evening and a touch football game on the lawn. At dark, someone flipped on the porch light for one last game. June bugs buzzed the light, beating their brains out on the side of the house.

Men, women, kids, the whole gang except for Sawyer’s pregnant sister, galloped and dodged, laughed and cheated in their usual outrageous manner. Even Bailey, after a very long nap, joined the fun. It was good, Sawyer thought as he watched her, to hear her laugh and play like the teenager she was.

With a pat of her growing belly, Allison opted out of the rough-and-tumble game, volunteering instead to stay inside with Ashton. Even though the baby mostly slept, waking only for a bottle and some fever reducer, Allison declared her need of practice.

Jade genuinely seemed to have a good time. And when she bashed into his side with a fearsome block, Sawyer purposely went sprawling on the thick grass.

Laughing the way he’d always wanted to hear, Jade shot out a hand.

He slapped her palm and wrapped his fingers around hers. “You’re tougher than you look.”

She tossed blond curls, sassy as she yanked him to his feet. “Told you.”

They grinned at each other, out of breath, until one of his ornery brothers shoved him from the back.

“Got a good one there, brother.” Brady twitched an eyebrow toward Jade.

Sawyer blew off the statement with a joke, though he suspected his big brother was right. “Not bad for a nosy girl.”

Jade elbowed him in the ribs. He oofed and moved forward, pretending there was more damage than there was.

Dawson jogged up beside them. “Early start in the morning. I’m heading home. Meet you at the Miller house at seven?”

“Us, too,” Brady said. “We’re still playing catch-up from being gone so long, and I’m meeting the mayor for breakfast. Zoning issues.”

Sawyer readjusted from play to work and mentally checked his schedule, glad Brady handled the business end of things. Give him a slab of wood and a hammer any day over schmoozing the mayor. “Gotta stop at the Building Supply first.”

Monday began a new workweek, always a busy day.

The party broke up as the adults gathered kids, toys and wet towels from the backyard and tromped inside.

“I’m grateful we didn’t have any break-ins this weekend.” Positioning himself next to Jade, Sawyer followed the crowd.

“Perhaps you’ll have no more construction site damage. The vandal seems to have focused on you personally.”

He made a frustrated noise. “Don’t remind me.”

“You are taking the precautions I suggested, aren’t you?”

“Sure.” Mostly. He was a man. He was annoyed and angry, not afraid.

Whatever the vandal’s motive, Sawyer refused to believe someone wished him physical harm. Still, being the target of anyone’s fury nagged at him. Who? Who could be doing this? Was it someone he knew? Someone he liked and thought liked him?

Mom came at Jade with a foil-wrapped packet and a Tupperware container. “Sawyer said you have a fridge and a microwave.
