Conclusion

The shifting of borders which is so characteristic for our narratives illustrates on a more general level that borders are neither ‘natural’ nor are they clear-cut and stable once they are drawn. Rather, borders like the meanings of any signifiers are always in flux and subject to constant and often contradictory efforts to fix them and keep them in a specific place. These social and political practices which develop, maintain or restructure specific boundaries are embedded in power-relations and result in specific social outcomes for the people affected by them.
