Chapter Ten
Lindy swirled back around to face him. “I mean, I won’t be here for you.”
Just then, a buggy rounded the corner and came straight toward them, its battery headlamps highlighting the two of them as if they were on stage. Lindy flinched in the light, shading her eyes with her hand.
“You’ve got to be kidding,” Reuben muttered, his voice full of disgust.
The buggy pulled right up to them and stopped.
“Hello, Reuben. Lindy.”
Lindy cringed. Of all people, it had to be Robert. And of course, Rachel would be in the buggy with him, even though she couldn’t see inside.
“Hello, Robert,” Reuben ground out.
“Nice evening,” Robert said.
Lindy held her tongue. Why had he stopped? Why hadn’t he just gone by? Did he really expect to have a chatty conversation with them out there on the road? She certainly wasn’t interested. She stood stiffly, waiting for him to drive on, and then she would march home like she intended to.
“Rachel, why don’t I let you off here? You and Lindy can walk home together, and I’ll take Reuben back home with me.”
Lindy nearly choked. He couldn’t be serious.
“Oh. All right. I guess that would be fine,” Rachel’s voice floated through the window.
Lindy gritted her teeth. Right then, she didn’t care if she ever saw either of the Mast twins again. Ever.
Rachel climbed out of the buggy and came around to stand by Lindy. Reuben looked torn. In the glow of the headlamp, Lindy saw his expression had tightened to steel. He looked at her.
“We can talk later,” he said.
She drew herself up. “Gut-bye, Reuben,” she said pointedly. She didn’t want to air their disagreement in public, but she intentionally said good-bye instead of good-night. She hoped he got the point.
He must have, for his face darkened even further. Then without another word, he circled the buggy and got in. Robert gave her a look which she couldn’t interpret. And in truth, she didn’t want to. All she wanted to do was go home and go to bed and forget the evening ever happened.
But Rachel wasn’t so inclined. She started in right away as soon as Robert and Reuben pulled away. “I see Robert was wrong,” she said cheerily. “I wondered about it when he told me…”
She paused, and Lindy felt obligated to respond. “Told you what?”
“That you and Reuben had broken it off. I thought it odd that you wouldn’t tell me, your own sister.” She laughed softly. “But he was wrong, of course. I’m glad, Lindy. I’m glad that you and Reuben are still courting.”
Her sister had to be as blind as a bat. How could she have possibly construed that interchange with courting? Didn’t she feel the tension in the air? Didn’t she sense the mood? Lindy glanced at her. Rachel was animated and practically bouncing down the road. And then Lindy’s mind clicked into place.
Rachel was happy because the threat was removed. The threat of Robert liking Lindy instead of her. She’d been worried. Lindy knew it now without a doubt.
