Lincoln even refused pleas to commute the sentence to life imprisonment and yielded to only a two-week stay on the grounds that the fruitless appeals “may have prevented the said Nathaniel Gordon from making the necessary preparations for the awful change which awaits him.” Otherwise, Gordon was told to dismiss “all expectation of pardon.” Gordon was hanged on February 21, 1862, the only execution for the slave trade in American history and the “death blow” to the transatlantic slave trade.
