at the intersection of hope and fear

Driving to dinner with my husband who has come back from a long day at work we talk about what we did and who we saw and where we went and I start telling him about having coffee with my friend . . . and I see the woman clearly in my head but my brain is holding her name for ransom, refusing to release it.

Oh God! She’s my close friend, I groan. I just saw her!

What the hell is her NAME!!!!

My husband knows the task is to sit and wait until I figure it out. He knows not to guess. He knows to let it rest.

He knows by now that I like to retrieve the lost word or name by letting it sneak into my head like a cat burglar returning the stash.

Annette! I shout.

See! Says he. Just leave it alone and it comes back to you!

. . . except for the times it doesn’t, I want to say

to myself

because how long before my lovely man

tires of trying to help
